  1. FRUITING BODIES - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the magazine, "Weird Tales, Summer, 1988," by Brian Lumley.

This picture reminds me of what is really important in life . . .

There are times when mother nature is in a good mood and treats us well, you can hear her singing, "how do I love thee, let me count the ways," and brings us days so beautiful you can't help but feel, "It's great to be alive".

But there are times when she's in a terrible mood, growling, "How shall I kill thee, there are so many ways". She has tiny deadly microbes, earthquakes, and giant tsunami waves to do us in. And in this picture she's throwing our homes into the sea, with us in them, and shouting, "Good riddance".

So, what's really important is doing things that make us happy while we are still alive on this ball of mud we call the Earth. Before the ravages of age or Mother Nature do their worst to us.

I thought about it for a while and then approached my wife who was sitting on the couch knitting a baby hat for a preemie in the local hospital. I asked her, "Honey, what can I do to make you happy?"

And without looking up she responded, "maybe later, I'm busy now".
And I responded, "No, no, that's not what I mean. I mean, really, what can I do to make your life happier?"

And she says. "It's not what you can do for me, it's what I can do for you!"
    I think John F. Kennedy said something like that . . .
So I said, "I guess it's what we can do for each other". And she says, "That's right, only let's do it later, I'm busy now". . .
